Working with Global Index Insurance Facility (GIIF)

An innovative IFC-led program is expanding access to index-based insurance for natural disasters and weather risks in developing countries.

IFC and its partners in GIIF would like to work with local insurers and financial institutions, as well as regulatory bodies and organizations and private sector organizations to build capacity and create a suitable regulatory and commercial environment for index-based insurance products.

In it's early stages, GIIF looks to support capacity building and risk transfer projects whose activities include:

Capacity Building

  • Raising awareness of the nature and use of index-based insurance to insurance against weather and other natural catastrophe risks
  • Encouraging local and regional financial institutions to play a more active role in all aspects of index-based insurance
  • Identifying local insurers able and willing to provide local services to enable index-based risks to be underwritten in compliance with local regulations prior to full or partial cession to the international reinsurance market
  • Developing and adapting new technologies and solutions to data related problems specifically applicable to a developing country or region
  • Developing relevant weather and other risk indices applicable to local environments
  • Developing other measures, technology and infrastructure to provide the required outputs

Risk Transfer Projects (not exhaustive)
  • Specify customer needs
  • Modeling risk exposure
  • Developing statistical data for assessment of risk
  • Assisting government and regulatory authorities to establish insurance laws and regulations permitting the conduct of index-based business
  • Identifying and training a local insurance companies through which the insurance policies will be issued and which can support the ongoing insurance process
  • Developing policy forms and pricing
  • Underwriting risks
  • Establishing effective measures to establish incidences of claims
  • Marketing the product
  • Issuing insurance policies

Current Opportunities

Global Index Insurance Facility (GIIF) grants are made through requests for proposals (RFP) following World Bank Group guidelines. GIIF Trust Fund also accepts Expressions of Interest (EOIs) or proposals not addressing an open RFP at certain times during the year, which will be posted on this webpage. Our project team welcomes your request for additional information at any time.

Qualified organizations can submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) when available.
