Insurance

The insurance sector fulfills an important role in economic development by providing risk management services to both individuals and businesses. Products such as micro-insurance, agricultural insurance, and index-based weather insurance are increasingly considered to be viable instruments for safeguarding people in emerging markets against specific risks. By promoting private sector investment and improved corporate government standards, IFC’s involvement spurs greater competition and commercialization in emerging economies.

IFC’s offers investment and advisory services to commercial institutions developing insurance products to the underserved, support the development of a strong local insurance sector in emerging markets, and contribute to the strengthening of local financial markets by increasing the capitalization of private insurers.

We focus on working with strong local companies that want to participate in consolidation and supporting local insurance players looking to expand beyond their borders.

IFC also supports bancassurance ventures to reduce intermediary costs and places a strong emphasis on training and education. These efforts address the limited level of understanding about the insurance industry in developing countries.
