The crisis in the worldwide insurance industry has meant that many global players are consolidating efforts or getting out of emerging markets altogether. While IFC maintains positive relationships with such firms, we are also taking a fresh look at other ways to build up the insurance industry in the developing world. We are newly focused on local players, seeking out strong local companies that want to participate in consolidation and supporting local insurance players that want to expand beyond their borders.

IFC is also supporting bancassurance ventures to reduce intermediary costs, and placing a strong emphasis on training and education. These efforts are critical, because of the limited level of understanding about the industry in the developing world.
