Distressed Assets

Distressed assets include loans, mortgages or other types of financial assets that are nonperforming for a variety of reasons. Investing in such assets is a business that has grown in importance only recently in developing countries. Investors purchase these assets from commercial banks and other financial institutions-usually at a discount to face value. Investors obtain a return by working out the assets and reselling them at higher values.

IFC offers a comprehensive package of services in distressed asset investing, including long-term loan financing, equity and mezzanine financing, technical assistance, and advisory services. Our involvement provides comfort to international investors, local partners, and governments, and is often a catalyst for other investors.

Recent distressed assets projects include: China Huarong AMC, Konsolidacni Bank in the Czech Republic, and China Construction Bank.
