The Sustainable Health Enterprise Foundation (SHEF) is a microfranchise network of 54 outlets extending affordable health care and medicines to underserved remote communities in Kenya. SHEF has two operating models: the first allows qualified community health workers (CHWs), to own and operate community pharmacies; otherwise known as CFWshops,™ that serve primarily as outlets for sale of medicines. The second is community-based CFW clinics which employ fully certified nurses, and are able to offer a wider range of drugs and health services to under-served and low-income areas. The microfranchise model offers local nurses a steady income, and enables the network to achieve volume discounts on medicines, and ensure high quality standards in diagnosing and treating patients.

The International Finance Corporation's patient capital loan will partially support SHEF’s plans to:

Improve outlets' performance:

  • Convert some “shops” into “clinics”, which on average perform 50% better than shops;
  • Develop and implement a sales promotion plan;
  • Continue to improve franchisees’ skills in business management; and
  • Improve the current data capture at the outlet level and existing data collection processes.

Improve SHEF’s operations and franchise management:
  • Develop, monitor, and enforce the implementation of standard procedures; and,
  • Conduct business skills training for staff involved in franchise management.
