SIWA highlighted in Al-Ahram’s weekly "Beyond" for its promotion of gender equality and women’s economic empowerment in Egypt

Gender inequalities hamper development and undermine important political, social and economic change across the globe. In Egypt, SIWA is working to combat gender inequity by bringing valuable economic opportunities and skills training to impoverished and uneducated women in the Siwan Oasis. To date, SIWA has provided training and income generating opportunities to more than 300 women. Income earned is most often used for health and food security issues. The IFC-GBI has been working with SIWA to fund and develop a patient capital loan facility; construct 2 satellite working facilities to improve the women’s working conditions; provide training in traditional Siwan handicrafts, and establish linkages with national and international exporters.
