IFC - International Finance CorporationIFC - International Finance Corporation -- » Reducing Poverty, Improving Lives...

Krishi Gram Vikas Kendra (KGVK) is a Non Governmental Organization providing rural Indian communities with a comprehensive array of essential services geared towards poverty alleviation, and an enhanced standard of living in India’s outlying areas.

The business model for KGVK centers around "Total Quality Management." This concept cultivates self-sustainable communities whose inhabitants have access to basic education, training in effective farming techniques, entrepreneurial development, health services and awareness, watershed management and women's empowerment programs.

KGVK's activities have yielded impressive results, including three-fold improvement in agricultural productivity through better water resources management, and a 70 percent increase in annual family income due to agriculture and livestock development.

Areas of Assistance

The International Finance Corporation's (IFC) Grassroots Business Initiative (GBI) is collaborating with Usha Martin, a large Indian steel manufacturer, to assist the efforts of KGVK in the following ways: :

Create a center for Business Initiatives, to provide grassroots enterprise development and vocational skills training for rural poor and marginalized people through a commercially viable business model.
Establish a Trade Facilitation Center, enabling rural producers (especially women) to access markets for their produce, and learn how to improve their farm practices.
Over the next eight years, the program is expected to result in increased income to over 41,000 homes. If the model proves to be self-sustainable, IFC will support its replication in other parts of the country.
