Nigeria is one of West Africa’s largest developing countries. Despite economic progress in recent years, and its abundance of important natural resources, particularly oil, Nigeria continues to be plagued by economic and social inequalities and lack of developed economic and social networks and institutions that would benefit its citizens.

FATE Foundation was established in 2000 by a group of concerned Nigerian interested in fostering economic opportunities for youth and informal entrepreneurs. FATE’s four core programs, including the Aspiring Entrepreneurs Training Program, Emerging Entrepreneurs Program and Alumni Network, allow its members and entrepreneurs to gain access to business development services, technical assistance and mentoring support they need in order to grow and develop their businesses, thereby making a lasting economic contribution to their communities. FATE is also expanding its existing services by linking up, with the help of IFC-GBI, to a local Microfinance Institution, to increase access to finance for its graduate entrepreneurs.

The IFC has supported the FATE Foundation through its Capacity Building Facility and its Grassroots Business Initiative with a grant for institutional strengthening of the different entrepreneurship programs, FATE’s curriculum development and the setting up of a FATE business incubator for outgoing entrepreneurs.

Additional support will be provided to link FATE assisted entrepreneurs with a local micro finance institution that can provide them with much needed financing to expand their newly created businesses.
