Carbon Emissions
IFC commits to being carbon neutral — reducing our energy consumption and then purchasing offsets for our net carbon emissions. Having a carbon neutral commitment is an integral component of IFC's corporate response to climate change.
IFC's Performance Standards on Social and Environmental Sustainability require that our clients measure and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. IFC is promoting greater investment in sustainable energy through a range of mechanisms and initiatives, and is facilitating the participation of emerging market companies in the market for carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol.
In keeping with this approach in our investment activities, IFC has adopted a three-step approach to becoming carbon neutral:
- Calculate our carbon emissions annually though a greenhouse gas inventory
- Reduce carbon emissions through familiar and innovative conservation measures
- Purchase carbon offsets to balance the remaining carbon footprint after our reduction efforts
