RECENT EVENTS
  • ESMID, together with the technical partners NASDAQ OMX, International Securities Consultancy (ISC), and Cadogan Financial, held a regional conference in Nairobi, “EAC Capital Markets Regionalization and Bond Markets Workshop.” The conference was attended by 70 capital market stakeholders from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, who represented a wide variety of organizations. The technical partners presented reports on their findings and recommendations. The stakeholders provided feedback and accepted the recommendations, indicating their strong buy-in and eagerness to move forward to the process of implementation.
  • ESMID, in collaboration with technical partners DevPar Financial, held a workshop in with East Africa capital markets regulators to discuss: the regional training program and materials prepared by the consultants; the appropriate administrative arrangements to oversee ongoing training and examinations for licensing individuals in the region; and the forward plan for rolling out training courses and various seminars.
  • ESMID participated in the Infrastructure Bond Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya to discuss practical ways on how to tap the capital markets to fund infrastructure projects, and to provide examples of industry best practice. ESMID was a member of the planning committee and facilitated some of the key speakers. The conference brought together 300 participants, including the president, prime minister, and 28 cabinet ministers and permanent secretaries. As a result of the conference, the Government of Kenya raised US$240 million through an infrastructure bond to finance key development projects.

  • ESMID in collaboration with technical partners, Cadogan Financial presented findings and recommendations from two reports on regionalization of capital markets in East Africa at a workshop with stakeholders in Kampala, Uganda. The workshop was well received by the participants, who supported a number of important propositions, including the need for staged development towards a regional market, the need to build capacity of East African Community institutions and Secretariat, and the importance of ensuring buy-in of cabinet level policy makers.
  • ESMID participated in the Making Finance Work for Africa (MFW4A) Forum in Accra, Ghana, where the team made a presentation on the program in an open session on Capital Markets. The team used the opportunity to network among partners interested in capital market development with a view to building partnerships that will enhance the development and impact of the ESMID program in East Africa and beyond.
