The ILO Convention 169 and the Private Sector publication is intended as a practical guide for IFC clients who operate in countries that have ratified Convention 169 on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples. It is the first guidance of its kind written for the private sector in relation to Convention 169 which is directed at governments. IFC prepared this publication, in close consultation with the ILO, in response to the experiences that IFC has had in recent years with private investments affecting indigenous peoples and their lands in Latin America.
IFC hopes this publication will help to raise awareness about the Convention and its possible implications for private sector companies, and provide added clarity and guidance for IFC clients. The publication should be read in conjunction with IFC's Performance Standard on Indigenous Peoples.
The Good Practice Note on Non-Discrimination and Equal Opportunity sets out the international provisions of non-discrimination in the workplace and draws on good practice examples to indicate circumstances where companies may take positive action both to prevent discrimination and encourage previously alienated or overlooked groups to participate in the labor market. The Good Practice Note provides guidance to IFC clients and other employers in emerging markets on promoting both equality and diversity, and overcoming discriminatory practices, while acknowledging that this can often be a controversial and difficult topic.
The Good Practice Note on Managing Retrenchment provides guidance to IFC clients and the wider private sector operating in emerging markets on how to plan and manage the process of retrenchment where significant job losses are anticipated. The guide helps companies think through the key issues, avoid common pitfalls and learn from the experiences of other companies to design a comprehensive Retrenchment Plan.
The first in a Good Practice Note series, this publication offers a unique private sector perspective on the topic of harmful child labor. It seeks to share corporate learning and experiences by providing companies with a range of basic, good practice approaches that other businesses have successfully applied in managing risks associated with child labor in their own workplaces and those of their vendors and suppliers.
