The Environmental Business Finance Program (EBFP) will address key market obstacles for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that benefit the global environment (Target SMEs) by:
Improving access to financing by establishing new sources of funding through local financial intermediaries;
Building the technical capacity of target SMEs and the financial institutions that serve them;
Helping to boost demand and supply for environmental products and services;
Building strategic partnerships with domestic, regional, and multilateral stakeholders to ensure the long-term sustainability of the environmental SMEs market.
The Program will help mitigate the risks associated with building a financial institution's environmental SME project portfolio. To facilitate this, the EBFP will:
Proactively develop SME markets, identifying viable environmental business opportunities for financial intermediaries;
Work with financial intermediaries to develop best practice SME finance tools and training;
Work with local organizations to cultivate business development services for SMEs.
