Activities Eligible for Financing

Energy Efficiency

Eligible Energy Efficiency projects are those that reduce the consumption of energy in the generation, delivery, or use of energy while delivering the same or an increased level of output. They must have significant energy efficiency savings (which differs by sector) and can include efficiency improvements at industrial/commercial facilities, appliance/equipment, and home design. The technologies can include:

  • Boilers
  • Efficient motors
  • Variable speed drives
  • Pumps
  • Compressors
  • Air conditioning
  • Heating
  • Refrigeration
  • Industrial process equipment
  • Lighting
  • Cogeneration

Renewable Energy

Eligible Renewable Energy projects are those which generate energy from rapidly renewing sources. These may include, but are not limited to:
  • Biomass
  • Small hydro (up to 10MW generation capacity)
  • Solar
  • Wind
  • Geothermal

Biodiversity Conservation and Prevention of Land Degradation

Biological diversity, or biodiversity, is the sum of all life on Earth. It refers to the diversity itself, the components of that diversity (plants, animals and genes), and the interactions between them (for additional information, see the IFC Guide to Biodiversity for the Private Sector).

Through the sustainable management of many high-impact sectors (agriculture, forestry, fisheries, ecological tourism, water resources, etc.), the Environmental Business Finance Program's projects aim to minimize the negative impacts on, or improve, global biodiversity. Examples of eligible projects are:
  • Sustainable harvesting of shade-grown coffee and cacao
  • Sustainable forestry
  • Certified harvesting of wood and non-forest timber products
  • Organic farming in buffer zones
