IFC is assisting the people of Indonesia and the Philippines to reverse the degradation of their marine biodiversity on coral reefs. The Marine Aquarium Market Transformation project (US$13.5m) is working with local stakeholders to address factors that contribute to loss of reef biodiversity. The marine ornamental trade is facing serious threats ranging from use of destruction harvesting methods to pricing and quality of the ornamentals. Market transformation through international Marine Aquarium Council's (MAC) certification is ensuring that the marine aquarium industry is sustainable, responsible and create global benefits that contribute to biodiversity protection, poverty reduction, sustainable livelihood and food security. MAMTI is achieving this transformation by:
building the capacity of community stakeholders to develop certifiable ecosystem management practices
ensuring quality scientific assessment and monitoring of coral reefs and marine ornamental stock
establishing no-take zones and undertaking reef and stock restoration
building the capacity of collectors to become certified
increasing the financial resources and business skills for collectors to participate in sustainable trade
increasing the participation of exporters, importers and retailers in certification
