Lolkisale Biodiversity Conservation Support Project
The project is sponsored by Boundary Hill Lodge Ltd in Tanzania, a joint venture between the Lolkisale Village Council and the Tarangire Conservation Company Ltd. The project whose total cost is US$1.6m is helping to implement an integrated conservation management plan for a 145,000 acre wildlife conservation area. It is helping to address and control ecosystem threats such as agriculture, charcoal production, livestock over grazing, low scale mining operations and illegal hunting. The project is realizing strong development impact because:
the creation of this conservation area is enhancing the preservation of biodiversity by stopping subsistence agriculture and illegal hunting while maintaining a permanent dispersal area for elephants.
the establishment of the up-market lodge with 50% ownership by the community is generating income while promoting broader awareness of the value of the biodiversity resources available.
schools and health centres are benefiting from the royalties paid by visitors.
