Founding Dean and Director of the Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, Nepal from March 1995 to August 2003. During this period the Manipal group developed a center of excellence in one of the most difficult and deprived regions demonstrating their ability to establish projects in adverse circumstances, including political flux and insurgency. The project is also a tribute to the social commitment of the group. Also helped in establishing the medical faculty of Kathmandu University while serving on the Faculty Board, Academic Council and the Senate. Served as Director Health Services of Andaman and Nicobar Islands from 1987 to 1992. The task was to provide comprehensive care to a population of 350,000 scattered over 39 islands. The need was to develop an effective model of health delivery with an appropriate mix of primary, secondary and tertiary care. This was daunting task for logistics reasons and dearth of trained manpower. For having effectively met the expectations of the population of the archipelago, was awarded the Vishisht Sewa Medal by the President of India. Served in the Indian Armed Forces, both in the Army and the Navy for a span of 28 years of which 20 years was in the specialty of Community Medicine, including on the faculty at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. |
