IFC in Russia: Investing in the Private Sector Since 1993

Financial Products

Russia became a shareholder and a member of IFC in 1993. As of March 31, 2008, IFC has invested around $3.9 billion of its own funds in 168 projects in the country across a variety of sectors. At present, Russia is the largest country exposure in IFC’s global portfolio, with a total committed portfolio of $2.8 billion.

In fiscal year 2007, IFC invested over $542 million in financial sector, general manufacturing, agribusiness, oil and gas, and telecom projects, including our first partial credit guarantee and interest liquidity facility to enhance a mortgage-backed securitization.

In fiscal year 2006, IFC invested $527 million in Russia. Investments in infrastructure and financial markets remained a high priority because of the catalytic role they play in development of the private sector. In the financial sector, IFC advanced mortgage, leasing and energy efficiency finance and introduced ruble-linked loans.

Advisory Services

Advisory services have been an integral part of IFC's strategy to develop and diversify the private sector in Russia since 1992. Currently, IFC advisory service programs provide expertise to Russian companies in the forestry and automotive sectors, advise firms on improving production and management practices, and link these firms as suppliers to larger producers.

In addition, we work with Russian banks to strengthen corporate governance practices and introduce new product lines such as financing for energy efficiency projects and mortgage lending in combination with advisory services. More on advisory projects in Russia.
