Bulgaria became a member of IFC in 1991. As of December 2008, IFC has committed more than $474 million of its own funds and has arranged over $128 million in syndications for investments in the country. Over the past few years, IFC has supported projects in key industries such as financial markets, general manufacturing, infrastructure and agibusiness sectors.
Advisory Services
Advisory work in Bulgaria began in the late 1990s with a diagnostic survey of the insurance sector. Since then, projects have included privatization work in the general manufacturing and banking sectors, and technical support to furniture producers and fruit farmers. IFC's Changing Role
IFC’s role in Bulgaria is changing in light of the country’s accession to the European Union and the growing availability of private financing. IFC will focus on the regions, sectors, and projects where IFC’s developmental role is crucial and for which private financing remains limited, emphasizing socially and environmentally sensitive sectors.
