IFC PEP-Aceh & Nias was established in October 2005 to support private sector development in tsunami, earthquake and conflict-affected areas. It is financed by both IFC and Australia, and works closely with the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency for Aceh and Nias (BRR).
Building on successful IFC programs, IFC PEP Aceh & Nias supports the development of the investment and business-enabling environment, restores livelihoods in key sectors, increases access to finance, and strengthens local business service providers.
Investment and Business Enabling Environment: IFC PEP Aceh & Nias works closely with local government to improve investment legislation and provide support services to potential investors. The facility also promotes public discussion of private sector issues with the local business community, chambers of commerce, and various branches of government branches.
Restoring Livelihoods: IFC PEP Aceh & Nias focuses on the fisheries, agribusiness and tourism sectors, with an emphasis on shrimp farming and palm oil production. These sectors provided livelihoods to over 150,000 before the tsunami. Working with BRR and other international agencies, the facility works on connecting local producers to markets and strengthening the value chain.
Access to Finance: IFC PEP Aceh & Nias is developing programs to introduce leasing to Aceh, which enables small businesses to procure equipment they need to grow. The facility will also work with selected banks to restructuring non-performing loans.
Business Service Providers: IFC PEP Aceh & Nias has been building the capacity of local providers through training the trainer programs to improve the quality of business services. The facility's graduates have been employed by local businesses and other international organizations throughout Aceh and Nias.
