Mekong Private Sector Development Facility (MPDF)

MPDF promotes small and medium enterprise development at the macro, meso and micro levels of the economy, and achieves economies of scale by implementing programs across Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR. Activities are tailored to suit local challenges and opportunities, and to respond to changing economic conditions. Donor support comes from the Asian Development Bank and the governments of Australia, Canada, Finland, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

MPDF works through six inter-related programs:

Business Enabling Environment Program: BEE Program activities include identifying private sector problems and practical solutions; disseminating research findings through meetings; the mass media and IFC-MPDF’s own publications; and facilitating dialogue between the private sector, government and other stakeholders.

Financial Markets Development Program: The FMD Program works with the financial sector to strengthen financial institutions deepen financial intermediation and increase access to finance.

Business Edge Management Training Program: MPDF’s Business Edge Program has developed a suite of affordable, locally tailored management training resources to improve individual and company performance. These include 1-2 day workshops, workbooks for self study, a rigorous competency-based ‘Train the Trainer’ certification process, and Business Edge TV, a weekly business information program in Cambodia.

Tourism Program: The Tourism Program is focused on small and medium-sized accommodation providers. The current Tourism program is built on MPDF’s pioneering web portals that have enabled 400 hotels and guest houses in 20 cities to market over the internet.

Garment and Handicraft Program: The Garment and Handicraft Program works with the garment industry to build managerial capacity in four key areas: production management, marketing and merchandising, human resources management and sustainability.

Agribusiness Program: MPDF’s Agribusiness Program is focused on improving supply chains and sustainable practices, initially with companies manufacturing wood, bamboo and rattan furniture.
