Bertin Project

Português

Washington D.C., June 12, 2009 – IFC has informed its Board of Directors that IFC and Bertin reached a mutual agreement in early May to discontinue their partnership.

IFC is committed to sustainability in the beef sector in Brazil and will continue to work with a wide range of stakeholders to help develop market based solutions to improve environmental and social standards in the sector.

During the two years of the project, IFC and Bertin have been able to advance the sustainability agenda in the beef sector in Brazil through a number of initiatives.

Specifically, we worked together to develop and implement a first of its kind Cattle Purchasing Procedure that addresses key social and environmental concerns associated with the industry.

IFC also provided advisory support to pilot a project with Bertin’s suppliers on better production practices to promote more efficient use of pasture land and reduce the pressure on critical forest resources.

Our joint work has been instrumental in establishing the Sustainable Beef Working Group – the industry’s only multi stakeholder forum to develop and promote implementation of sustainable practices. The Group consists of Brazil’s major beef processors, large purchasers of beef, financiers, and prominent NGOs.
