IFC invests directly in the private sector to create opportunities and generate prosperity in developing countries. We have expertise across many sectors that are grouped into industry departments. We aim to maximize the development impact of our investments, and development results are an important input into IFC’s strategy and the planning and implementation of new operations.
IFC’s results are influenced by a host of external and internal factors. These may include the macroeconomic conditions of the countries and regions in which we operate, global economic developments affecting prices and our clients´ competitiveness, and industry-specific trends as well as IFC's own work quality.
Overall Development Outcome - Results by Industry Department

DOTS data as of June 30, 2009, for projects approved in calendar 2001-2006.

Development results differ across IFC’s industry sectors, and external conditions explain in part the differing achievements and performance. Positive market conditions have aided some sectors. For example, economic expansion and exchange rate stability in the years preceding the global downturn have benefited IFC’s investments in the financial sector, and booming commodity markets have helped the performance of extractive industries investments. Strong competition in other sectors has dampened financial profitability along with overall development outcome results. Regional and country exposure affect results beyond sector-specific or global economic trends, as some environments are easier or more difficult to operate in.
Results are also affected by IFC's own work quality, and the primary objective of tracking results is to understand what drives both high and low ratings so that we can continue to improve IFC’s performance. Any cross-sectoral comparison of development results must be supplemented by an analysis of the various external and internal factors driving each industry’s performance.
