Industrial Bank, the initial partner bank of IFC’s China Utility-based Energy Efficiency Finance Program (CHUEE), was nominated as one of the Emerging Markets Sustainable Banks by 2007 Financial Times Sustainable Banking Awards in April 2007. The financing product for energy efficiency (EE) projects developed by IB was nominated as the "Sustainable Deal of the Year" by the Newspaper. Industrial Bank (IB) is the only Chinese commercial bank nominee in this category this year.
IFC’s CHUEE team has provided intensive technical assistance in the areas of project development, credit underwriting, EE project due diligence and marketing to IB in the implementation of financing energy efficiency projects since the loss sharing agreement was signed in May 2006 between IFC and IB.
IFC and the Financial Times created these awards to recognize financial institutions worldwide that have shown leadership and innovation in integrating social, environmental, and corporate governance objectives into their operations. Selected from 151 entries representing more than 100 banks in 51 countries, the diverse nominees reflect the rising importance of sustainable banking around the world, especially in emerging markets.
The five categories include:
- Sustainable Bank of the Year
- Emerging Markets Sustainable Bank of the Year
- Sustainable Bankers of the Year – Award for Innovation
- Sustainable Deal of the Year
- Achievement in Carbon Finance
For the first time, the awards also highlight regional leadership under the Emerging Markets category.
