Capacity Building Project on Corporate Governance for SADC DFIs

The Global Corporate Governance Forum has identified the need for developing a customized corporate governance training programme for the directors and trainers in the DFI sector, and particularly relevant to the SADC region. This project was initiated in January 2007 with a series of consultations, stakeholder meetings, validations of the design, curriculum and content, eventually leading to pilot progrmmes and finalization of the material for both directors and trainers. Several options, alternatives and trades-off have been closely considered to arrive at this final product.

The notable points of this design and material are that:

    • the duration is expected to be four days in the case of the directors` program and five days for the trainers;
    • participants shall be selected to ensure adequate motivation to learn in the case of the directors` program and that they are credible and competent trainers / administrators of director development initiatives, in the case of the trainers` program;
    • the faculty would be credible speakers with specific insights into the DFI sector or the banking sector in dealing with the specialized modules;
    • the program has been structured to give the contours of corporate governance and advanced issues relating to corporate governance of DFI’s, laying the foundation and giving insights into the architecture while expecting the participants to develop an orientation for further learning and development along the lines indicated;
    • each of the sessions have more slides than may be required, to give the trainer the requisite freedom and flexibility to elaborate on some slides more than the others, as appropriate to the target group;
    • the trainer has the flexibility to administer the case studies in the class room or in breakaway sessions with appropriate plenary presentations;
    • the program expects the participants to draw up personal action plans for self development, implementation of corporate governance reform / developmental initiatives in the respective DFI’s; and
    • that programs will lead to certification by the Forum and SADC-DFRC and hence will be quality controlled as appropriate and updated when required.

The toolkit includes PowerPoint Presentation, Case Study and Background reading which are designed for a four days training. For more information about this toolkit, please contact Project Officer Ms. Ghita Alderman at Galderman@ifc.org
