IFC Middle East and North Africa Corporate Governance Advisory Services in collaboration with IFC’s Global Corporate Governance Forum (Forum) organized a two-day workshop on enhancing the capacity of Institutes of Directors in MENA region to develop and market corporate governance training programs. The high level workshop was held on May 4th and 5th, 2009 in Cairo, Egypt. As the second one in a series of workshops on corporate governance basics, it brought together regional representatives from Egypt, Lebanon, Pakistan, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Oman to share their knowledge and improve their understanding of corporate governance training. The workshop was structured on the basis of the Forum’s Toolkit I on “Building Sustainable Director Training Organizations”, which provides step-by-step approach and practical advice on how to set up and strengthen organizations to promote director professionalism by concrete business planning and governance tools. Each country’s delegates shared their experience and presented an action plan what they plan to do over the next sic months to develop or strengthen their institute’s training capacity. The event was moderated by Emmanuel Du Boullay, one of the founders of the French Institute of Directors and member of the Forum’s Private Sector Advisory Group and an expert commentary was carried out by Leonardo Viegas, the Founding Member and Director of the IBGC Brazil as well as the member of the Forum’s Private Sector Advisory Group. “I believe that there is a direct link between corporate governance and economic progress. The goal of corporate governance is to make everything run more smoothly, including infrastructure, so companies can operate more easily and attract capital. Good corporate governance brings credibility to companies”, said Leonardo Viegas. “Each country needs to focus on different sets of issues regarding implementation, but corporate governance can help everyone”, added Emmanuel Du Boullay. This is the second of a series of workshops on building sustainable director training institutions. The first one, held on 22nd and 23rd of October, 2008 in Rabat, Morocco focused on how to establish Institutes of Directors (more information available here). The third workshop focuses on how to train director trainers (ToT) and on how to deal with the challenges of adult learning and how to develop curricula based on existing materials offered by both IFC MENA CG Advisory Services as well as the Forum’s Board Leadership Training Resources toolkit.
