IFC - International Finance CorporationIFC - International Finance Corporation -- » Reducing Poverty, Improving Lives...

IFC hires summer interns each year for a minimum period of four weeks to work on discrete projects in Washington, DC or in one of IFC’s country or regional offices. IFC’s summer internships are paid positions. The program is very competitive: we receive about 900 applications each year, from which 30-40 candidates are selected. Following a thorough evaluation process at the conclusion of the internship, a select set of summer interns are invited to interview for the Global Transaction Team Program and other full-time opportunities.

Summer Interns are assigned to an industry, regional or service department within IFC. Assignments cover various areas of work, such as sector-specific business development, investment proposal review, financial modeling and analysis, advisory services strategy, and ex-post investment project evaluation. The assignment depends on the needs of the department and the particular fit for the candidate.

Selection Criteria

Candidates must be in the first or second-to-last year of an MBA or similar graduate program. Specific selection criteria include:

  • For investment positions, work experience (4-8 years) in international finance, which could include corporate finance, investment banking, financial consulting, private equity, credit analysis, or commercial banking
  • Knowledge of sectors relevant to IFC and emerging markets experience preferred
  • Strong analytical, communication and negotiation skills
  • Business development and client relationship skills
  • Enthusiasm for working in multicultural teams and across borders
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in one or more of Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish strongly preferred
  • Commitment to sustainable private sector development
Application and Process

IFC accepts applications online from December 1 through January 15 of each year. Candidates who are short-listed will be informed of their placement in a Summer Internship Program database accessible by all IFC departments. Individual departments contact candidates directly for interviews and usually conclude their hiring decisions by about March 15 of each year. Not all short-listed candidates will be selected for interviews.
