IFC s Environment & Social Development Department (CES) makes an important contribution to this mission by providing staff expertise to clients and helping IFC maintain a position of leadership in the global development community. IFC's environmental and social requirements have become the global benchmark for investment in emerging markets. In accordance with its Policy on Social and Environmental Sustainability, IFC supports its clients in their efforts to manage the social and environmental aspects of their proposed investments, and to add value to their businesses through investments of a social and environmental nature. CES is seeking to strengthen its global team of environmental and social development specialists through recruitment of an Environmental and Social Development Specialist for its regional office in Istanbul. The Specialist will collaborate with investment staff and CES colleagues to support IFC s investments in financial intermediaries (FIs), including banks, financial institutions and private equity funds.

Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Independently review and appraise new investment proposals, identify environmental and social issues as early in the project cycle as possible, provide recommendations for IFC action and draft relevant project cycle documentation;
  • Supervise environmental and social performance of projects;
  • Provide expert advice and communicate IFC requirements to private sector clients and investment staff to achieve positive sustainable development outcomes;
  • Assist in the development of annual supervision work plans for projects including definition of resource requirements and coordination with regional departments;
  • Assist IFC investment staff with business development related to environmental opportunities beyond risk management;
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of learning programs on sustainability and environmental risk management for FIs and IFC staff;
  • Work on the development of tools, checklists and guidelines to improve efficiencies of project processing and enable improved client management of environmental and social issues;
  • Maintain and update IFC management systems and tools relating to FI investments as needed;
  • Develop a network of regional consultants to assist IFC clients in building their capacity to manage environmental and social risks;
  • Work with other IFIs to synergize efforts on FI training and capacity building and harmonization of requirements on projects.

  • Post-graduate or graduate degree in relevant discipline (environmental, social sciences, science, engineering);
  • 5-10 years of practical experience in environmental and/or social management and assessment; experience in the financial sector preferred;
  • Familarity with the concept of management systems in general, and environmental and social management systems in particular;
  • In-depth practical experience in addressing environmental management issues. Consultancy, contracting and/or operational experience in the region is a plus;
  • Familiarity with financial sector products and how they operate;
  • Familiarity with IFI approaches to FIs and their development agenda;
  • Experience/familiarity with indicators capturing effectiveness of environmental and social management in the context of FIs;
  • Experience and/or familiarity with the Performance Standards of IFC and the Safeguard Policies of the World Bank Group is desirable;
  • Experience working in developing countries;
  • Excellent English communication and presentation skills with fluency in a second language (Arabic, French, Russian, Spanish etc) highly desirable;
  • Experience with sustainable finance opportunities such as renewable energy, cleaner production, energy efficiency, development finance;
  • Ability to operate as a member of a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team
  • Good team player who can help motivate and lead group efforts and effectively network across boundaries; Other
