Background / General description:

The International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, promotes sustainable private sector investment in developing countries as a way to reduce poverty and improve people s lives. In addition to its investment work, IFC executes a major program of private sector advisory services projects (AS) in Europe and Central Asia. The objectives of the program are to promote direct investment in the private sector, build local businesses and financial intermediaries, and help improve the business enabling environment. The Project: IFC s recently launched Ukraine Food Safety Improvement Project endeavours to decrease food safety related risks and increase the competitiveness of Ukrainian food processors in three key sectors (meat, dairy, bakery) by raising awareness and facilitating wider implementation of best international food safety management practices (based on HACCP and ISO 22000), build stronger local consulting capacity, and improve selected regulations to harmonize Ukrainian legislation with international best practices. The Project will run for 36 months and is part of a regional advisory /investment initiative including Central Asia and the Caucasus.

Duties and Accountabilities:

The Food Safety Specialist will be responsible for recruiting and advising food processing companies on their needs related to food safety management. In addition to direct involvement with company interventions and support to IFC Investment Services, the Food Safety Specialist will also provide technical support to the project in its public awareness, training, and policy activities. The position requires solid technical skills, excellent relationship abilities, and strong multi-tasking capacity. Duties and responsibilities:
  • Provide gap assessments and consultations to food processing companies on food safety management including but not limited to General Manufacturing Practices, General Hygiene Practices, HACCP, and ISO 22000
  • Assist Project Manager in recruiting and engaging training consultants
  • Develop and deliver project and seminar materials and tools for food processing companies, investors, policy makers, and other stakeholders on food safety management systems
  • Provide technical input on training and seminar content
  • Develop contacts and manage relationships with client and other counterparts
  • Analyze draft regulations and existing legislation related to food safety issues
  • Prepare section of donor reports, conduct research, and write articles on these topics; provide content for the project Web site
  • Coordinate work and manage relationships with IFC clients and partners to deliver maximum visibility
  • Proactively seek opportunities to share knowledge about and promote the project's work to all internal and external stakeholders
  • Participate in all project planning and strategy work
  • Any other duties as required by project priorities and management
  • Selection Criteria:

  • Degree in microbiology and at least five years of work experience in food safety as food safety specialist in food processing company or consulting company
  • Hands-on knowledge of international food safety management systems and Ukrainian agribusiness
  • Strong analytical skills and proven ability to quickly produce concise and well structured reports and presentations
  • Well grounded business sense and ability to effectively communicate with business leaders and policy makers
  • Diligence, accuracy, ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication skills in Ukrainian, Russian, and English
  • Good computer skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel across Ukraine and in the region
