The Financial Times Sustainable Banking Awards, created in association with IFC, this is the first truly global awards program dedicated to recognizing banks that have shown leadership and innovation in integrating social and environmental objectives into their operations, while still maximizing financial gain for the benefit of shareholders. Founding date of the International Finance Corporation, private sector financing arm of the World Bank Group; IFC, the first multilateral created to promote private sector development in the developing nations, was a pioneer in foreign direct investment and coined the term “emerging markets” in 1981; today, IFC continues to introduce an ever-wider array of investors and securities instruments into the developing nations and is the global benchmark for environmental and social standards in project finance (the Equator Principles). Publication of The Emerging Markets Century: World Class Companies and Strategies to Watch by Antoine van Agtmael, founder and president of Emerging Markets Management, LLC (Simon & Shuster). Van Agtmael, who coined the term “emerging markets” while working for IFC, served as division chief in the World Bank’s Treasury operations and as deputy director of IFC’s Capital Markets Department. While at IFC, he also created the world’s first emerging markets equity index; Agtmael previously published World Emerging Stock Markets (1993) and Emerging Securities Markets (1984).
