Global Business School Network: Transitioning to Sustainability

IFC has worked on the Global Business School Network program since 2004, helping enhance the institutional capacity of business schools in emerging markets—mainly in Africa—by partnering with faculty at top business and management schools in Europe, the United States, and elsewhere.

The Global Business School Network has successfully helped:

Develop local case studies with the United States International University in Kenya
Build faculty capacity at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration
Strengthen the Enterprise Development Services Centre at Lagos Business School in Nigeria.

GBSN also helped establish the Association of African Business Schools, with membership from the leading business schools on the continent. It also helped develop a Teaching the Practice of Management faculty training program that has reached over 200 faculty from 30 business schools in Africa.

Now that the network is becoming sustainable, IFC has transitioned all program activities to the Management Education & Research Consortium, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. MERC now serves as the secretariat for GBSN and manages the linking of African business schools to various international schools and faculty. It also coordinates internal and external communications for the network, convenes member meetings, and implements capacity-building projects. For more information, visit www.mercnetwork.org.

MERC also works closely with the Association of African Business Schools, through which the region’s business schools support each other by setting membership standards, providing faculty training, and establishing priorities for collaboration with international business schools in the GBSN network.
